More wine, or is it just the right season?




First, I apologise for the quality of the photos, I'm still playing with the the zoom and close up functions on the camera. However, these pictures are of Lyrarakis wines; one new in stock and one already on the shelf. The black label is syrah , 2001.
The pale label is 'mystikos deipnos' (literally - secret feast).

Milk and sausages

Unfortunately, the milk shortage is likely to last until February. Delta is changing it's base in Paros so for the next month all the milk is delivered direct from Athens, which as we are sure some of you have noticed, does not happen as regularly as usual. Our next milk delivery will be on Monday and probably from then on only twice a week - if we are lucky.
However, we do also stock Olympos fresh milk.

On the subject of shortages, our delicatessen fridge may look a little empty this week: it seems our butchers in the north of Greece need some time to recover from the festive period so no meats will be delivered until the following Saturday. Our order for smoked sausages and ribs goes in on Thursday so please let Natasha know before then if there is anything particular you would like. We currently still have ribs and smoked Romanian sausage (if you smell the garlic, that is it), at only 6,70 euros a kilo.

New year, better shopping

We hope better shopping, bigger choice, new products...

This coming year we would like to expand our wine collection - there are currently some empty spaces which need filling and would appreciate suggestions and feedback. Last year, on customer recommendations, we brought Nasiakos Moschofilero and Pavlidis To Thema which have become two of our best selling labels.
Aswell as the selection of greek wines, in 2008 we hope to enlarge our international choice: Italian; French; Californian etc...
Eastern European wine already has a name for itself in England (Romanian and Bulgarian reds are some of my favourites) and perhaps this year they will also become more popular in Greece. We currently stock two Bulgarian dry reds (a merlot and a cabernet) and a semi-dry (charmingly called 'Bear's Blood) as well as a couple of white wines which tend to sell out as fast as we bring them. Perhaps they will deserve a seperate post.
All of these are priced at under 5 euros a bottle.

Finally, our first new product for the year: 7-up zero. Several of our regular customers requested no sugar soft drinks and I second their feeling that it is a shame so few shops stock it in the winter-time.

Semeli, agiorgitiko, 2004

Classic agiorgitiko flavour with a little spice. The label mentions cherries and plums.
We drank it with salami de Milano and cretan graviera, which didn't over-power the mild flavour, but perhaps spicy foods would need a stronger wine.
